The Old Andrean and Old Dalian Golf Day in Cape Town – A Day of Legends and Laughter
What a truly magnificent day we shared at the Steenberg Golf Course for the inaugural Old Andrean and Old Dalian Golf Day on Thursday 9 October 2025! It was an occasion that perfectly captured the spirit of friendship, camaraderie, and shared history between our two great Eastern Cape schools.
We gathered to celebrate two truly wonderful men and legends of their time, HO de Villiers and Mickey Paterson, and the day couldn’t have been more fitting. The weather was absolutely perfect, providing a glorious backdrop for the 58 golfers who took to the greens.
Highlighting the Day
The day was made even more special by the presence of Angela Sillifant, Mickey Paterson’s daughter. A star golfer herself, Angela delighted us by sharing moving insights and stories of her father’s experiences at both schools.
We were also honoured to have Wayne Naidoo, Headmaster of Wetpups school, join us. Wayne certainly led by example, reportedly carrying his four-ball of James Melvill (Armstrong 2006), Nic Sadleir (Mullins 2001), and Richard Levesque (Mullins 2002) through 16 of the 18 holes! A brilliant four-ball of Marcus Susman (Espin 2000), Mark Ward (Espin 2000), Paul Harington (Upper 2000), and Jamie Featherstone showcased some exceptional golf, demonstrating exactly where the “tiger line” was for the field to follow.
The generous spirit of our community shone through with the incredible prizes kindly donated by so many. A heartfelt thank you to all who contributed—your kindness truly made the day special.
The Competition and The Trophy
The competition was fierce but friendly! Ultimately, the overall winners on the day for the floating trophy were the Old Andreans.
The trophy, aptly named “Iqhawe”- meaning Legend/Hero – symbolises the very spirit of the men we celebrated and the legends our schools inspire. We look forward to seeing who claims it next when the Old Dalians and Old Andreans meet again, this time on the beautiful cricket fields of the Western Cape!
A big thank you goes out to Old Dalian Chairman Phiwe Ndinisa and Old Dalian WC Chairman Steve Palframan for their efforts in ensuring such a well-run and enjoyable day.
A Lasting Legacy
We are also proud to announce that some of the OA funds raised during the golf day will be dedicated to a lasting tribute for Mickey Paterson – a special plaque on the wall of remembrance at St Andrew’s College. This plaque will ensure his memory and contribution are celebrated for generations to come.
Overall, the day was a resounding success – a wonderful day shared between two schools, where the bond and beauty of the Eastern Cape shone through in friendship and laughter.
