DOUGLAS SMITH SCHOLAR-ELECT 2022

DANIEL JAMES THARRATT

The Headmaster of St Andrew’s College, Mr Alan Thompson, is delighted to announce that Dr Daniel James Tharratt has been awarded the Douglas Smith Scholarship to study at Cambridge University in 2022.

Douglas Smith was a Teacher and Cricket Professional at St Andrew’s College for 41 years, and he bequeathed his estate to St Andrew’s College in the form of the Douglas Smith Scholarship which would sponsor an Old Andrean to study at the University of Cambridge. It was first awarded in 1952, and Dr Tharratt is the 25th recipient of this unique scholarship.

Daniel was the St Andrew’s Preparatory School Blackburn Scholar to College and he achieved seven distinctions in Matric in 2013. He achieved silver awards for both English and Mathematics Olympiads and won the History prize in Grade 10. He achieved an A level in Thinking Skills through Cambridge International Examinations. He was awarded the prestigious Antony Clark plate in his junior years for being the most impressive all-rounder and in his Grade 10 year he was selected as an Australian exchange scholar to Canberra Grammar School.

Daniel’s involvement in sport and cultural activities were impressive and his leadership was evident on the President’s Award and Debating Committees. His empathy towards others also saw him achieve the Silver standard for the President’s Award and he also achieved his Level One First Aid Certificate, and a Merit Award for Community Engagement. Daniel played Cricket, captaining the 3rd XI in his Matric year, but his most notable achievement was in Hockey, where he represented College in the First XI and achieved Provincial Colours as part of the U18B Eastern Province Hockey team, for which he was also awarded his College Hockey Colours.

Daniel was the Head of House of Merriman House where he proved to be an assertive and courageous leader and was admired by all as a person of integrity, empathy and great determination.

Daniel was accepted to study Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he was Vice Chairperson of the Ernest Oppenheimer Hall and Member of the Surgical Society. He was an academic tutor and coached sport at St John’s College. He graduated with his MBChB in 2019, and has been completing his Medical Internship at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Johannesburg. He plans to study an MPhil in Population Health Sciences at the University of Cambridge.
