Written by Andrew Keeton, February 2021
Mr Gunther Marx (OA Espin, 1981-85) was on the staff of St Andrew’s College from 1996 until 2019. In 1999 he took up the position of the 9th Housemaster of Mullins House. As Housemaster, “he created an environment which allowed boys to thrive and express themselves in a non-judgemental environment. He forged strong and lasting relationships with the boys in the House.”
At St Andrew’s Gunther taught Business Studies, was Master in Charge of Hockey and 1st XI hockey coach, and after leaving Mullins House at the end of 2005 he was appointed as Deputy Headmaster. A passionate Old Andrean, Gunther served on the OA Club committee for many years. In 2020 Gunther was appointed as Deputy Principal at Collegiate Girls’ High School in Port Elizabeth.

Pete Andrew
Written by Andrew Keeton, February 2021
Mr Pete Andrew (Honorary OA) arrived at College in 2005 as Director of Sport. He was the 10th Housemaster of Mullins House from 2006 until 2011. It was during his term as Housemaster that Mullins House was renovated in 2010. He very ably oversaw the logistics that were involved in the Mullins boys having to stay in the San, at St Andrew’s Prep and in other Houses while the renovations were underway, before the reopening of Mullins House.
Pete led many groups on the John Jones Fish River Journey over the years, and was later the JJFRJ Co-ordinator. He was also Master in Charge of Cadets.
At the end of 2020 Pete and his wife Lin (Honorary OA), who was the College Archivist for ten years, retired to Bushman’s River Mouth.

Quotes from Heads of House
2005 Head of House, Luke Van Der Walt, said in his House Supper speech:
“Mullins is more like a family away from home. And everyone in this family has a place, an individual contribution to make in order to allow the whole to function effectively. It is the characteristic of never giving up that defines what a Mullins boy is.”
2011 Head of House, Paul Selwyn-Smith, wrote in the Mullins House Record Book:
“Mullins House is a place that welcomes every individual for who they are and allows them to be their own person. It is with this unique variety of boys that Mullins boys will never go a day without laughter and the camaraderie in and amongst the boys is simply irreplaceable.”
Suzi Lacey Painting
Herewith is a painting of Mullins House that was created by Suzi Lacey in 2002 as my 18th birthday present whilst I was in my matric year. Suzi was mother to Elizabeth Lacey (DSG class of 2002), mother of Andrew Lacey, another Mullins boy (grade 8 in 2002) and wife to Tudor Lacey, who was also in Mullins House and was my private swimming coach.
Tudor at one stage held the world record for 50m freestyle in a short course swimming pool and recently held the position of swimming coach at St Andrew’s College.
The 2 boys in the painting are Jeffrey Allan and myself, whilst “trekking” back to Mullins College for lunch.
