Notes from a very small Island during the time of lockdown by ROBERT IAN CALDWELL (DOC) (Mullins 1962)

Illustrated by renowned artist Tony Grogan, this delightful compilation of letters, written by Doc to his Aunt Ethel, documents his personal experience of lockdown and memories of a life well lived.

Foreword by Tony Grogan
During the time of Covid, a period of isolation, anxiety and depression, Doc’s letters to Aunt Ethel written from his little piece of heaven on the Garden Route came as a ray of sunshine. He wrote with empathy, wit and insight of his own experience and incidental reminiscences of a rich and colourful life in an inimitable style. Doc has a way with words which is expressive and entertaining, and he knows how to exploit the vagaries and ambiguities of the English language with humorous effect.

Doc shared with his Coviceptors thoughts, memories and opinions as a doctor and as a student. The letters are rich with amusing anecdote, wise comments and quite a lot of personal pain which is shared with sympathy and tenderness. He places great value on family and companionship, which shines through the pages of the letters with warmth and humour.

I have been very complimented to be invited to provide illustration to accompany Doc’s comedic text and to participate in what will be a valuable personal archival record of the time of Covid in South Africa.
